From the time of the first settlements, squares and town squares have been an essential part of people’s social and cultural life, religion, commerce and politics. Together with the development of society, climatic and morphological conditions, squares have been shaped and modified systematically and individually, and these transformations have always reflected the use of space according to the needs of its users. The Pilsen square, created in the High Middle Ages, abounds in ostentatious scale with the dominating feature of St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, but less so in providing a quality living space for the city’s contemporary inhabitants and their everyday activities. We therefore propose natural adaptations that are appropriate to contemporary society and changing climatic conditions, but which honour the original qualities of the existing square and breathe new life into the historic buildings, making the square an everyday destination for residents and visitors to the West Bohemian metropolis.
